Alex Von Schulze is a 2017-2021 Self Graduate Fellow pursuing a Ph.D. in molecular and integrative physiology at the University of Kansas Medical Center. Von Schulze received a B.S. (2011) in biomedical science from Northern Arizona University, Flagstaff, AZ, and a M.S. (2016) in health and sports science from the University of Memphis, TN. Von Schulze is interested in understanding the molecular mechanisms by which physical activity and heat therapy impact mitochondrial health and can prevent metabolic dysfunction in humans. He plans to use this information to develop novel therapeutic strategies to combat metabolic disease. Upon obtaining his Ph.D., Von Schulze hopes to use his expertise in metabolic health to inform public policy regarding physical activity and nutritional standards in K-12 schools.
