Biography

Ava Taylor is a 2023-2024 Self Memorial Scholar pursuing an M.A. in Speech-Language Pathology at the University of Kansas. She holds a B.A. in Speech-Language-Hearing and a minor in Linguistics from the University of Kansas. During her undergraduate career, Ava led her major’s peer mentor program and KU’s linguistics club while sharing her passion for language. She has regularly interacted with adults with speech and language disorders where she has worked as a retirement community waitress and caregiver. She later acted as a research assistant in the Speech Sciences and Disorders lab by analyzing the speech of patients with dysarthria, which further sparked her interest in such acquired disorders. Ava hopes to work with Spanish-speaking clients as a bilingual speech-language pathologist (a much-needed demographic of SLPs), and her primary focus is to serve adults with acquired speech and language disorders in a medical setting.
