Biography —
Clarice Sabolay is a 2025-2029 Self Graduate Fellow from Belleville, Illinois, pursuing a Ph.D. in chemical engineering at the University of Kansas. She was previously named a Self Memorial Scholar during her first year of graduate study. In May 2024, she earned her Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering with a biomedical engineering emphasis from the University of Kansas. Clarice’s passion for sustainable engineering research began with her extensive undergraduate research background and continues throughout her doctoral work. She is currently involved with the NSF Engineering Research Center for Environmentally Applied Refrigerant Technology Hub (ERC EARTH) where her research focuses on the separation of refrigerant mixtures—gases that contribute to global warming and climate change— using ionic liquids. Her goal is to develop a novel screening technique to identify optimal ionic liquids for refrigerant separation, allowing for their recycling or reuse. Alongside her work, Clarice aims to combine sustainable engineering research with mentorship and teaching. She is dedicated to creating an inclusive and collaborative environment that fosters trust, growth, and leadership within the next generation of engineers.
Mentor: Mark Shiflett, Ph.D. Director, Wonderful Institute For Sustainable Engineering Foundation, Distinguished Professor.
