Biography —
Jared Melendrez is a 2025–2029 Madison and Lila Self Graduate Fellow pursuing a Ph.D. in the Biomedical Sciences at the University of Kansas Medical Center (KUMC). Originally from Hacienda Heights, California, he earned his B.S. in Biotechnology from California State University, San Marcos in 2024. Prior to beginning his doctoral studies, Jared was a 2024–2025 NIH-funded Postbaccalaureate Research Scholar at the University of Kansas–Lawrence, where he conducted immunology research focused on an autoimmune-associated genetic variant in the context of antiviral immunity.
In addition to his academic pursuits, Jared serves as a Staff Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps Reserves, a role he has held since 2016. His military service continues to inform and inspire his research interests. Jared’s long-term goal is to lead a federally funded research laboratory investigating the biological impacts of anthropogenic pollutants on servicemembers. Through this work, he aims to support evidence-based policies that mitigate health risks and improve long-term outcomes for those who serve. With a dual focus on therapeutic development and science-informed policy change, Jared is committed to translating his research into tangible benefits for the military and veteran communities.
