Biography —
Lakyn Leupold is a 2026-2030 Self Graduate Fellow from Kansas, pursuing a Ph.D. in atmospheric science at the University of Kansas. Lakyn earned a B.S. in atmospheric science with an emphasis in air pollution from KU in 2025, along with a certificate in climate and climate change. Her academic interests center on the connections between climate change, air quality, human health, and community resilience.
Lakyn’s current research focuses on understanding how climate change may influence future air quality across the United States. Her work involves developing a climate modeling framework using stochastic weather generators to simulate future weather conditions and examine how air quality may change under a changing climate. Through this research, Lakyn also studies which populations may be most vulnerable to climate-related air quality impacts.
Lakyn is passionate about climate mitigation, adaptation, and science communication. She believes climate research should not only advance scientific understanding, but also help communities prepare for environmental challenges. After completing her Ph.D., Lakyn hopes to pursue a career that combines atmospheric research, applied climate science, and public engagement to support healthier and more resilient communities.
