Biography

Megan Myers is a 2021-2025 Self Graduate Fellow pursuing a Ph.D. in Microbiology, Molecular Genetics, and Immunology at the University of Kansas Medical Center. After growing up in Olathe, KS, Myers graduated from the University of Kansas in 2020 with a B.S. in Microbiology and a minor in Philosophy. While pursuing her undergraduate degree, Myers completed research focused on exploring the nervous system of organisms, such as tunicates and tardigrades, while optimizing microscopy techniques. Her current research in the laboratory of Jeffrey Bose, Ph.D., involves understanding the structure and function of proteins in the Fatty Acid Kinase Complex of Gram-positive bacteria, specifically within the pathogen, Staphylococcus aureus. Her research aims to better understand the way bacteria acquire and use fatty acids from the host environment and use this knowledge to inform new and effective therapeutics. Upon graduation, Myers plans to combine her passions in a leadership role in Research and Development to better understand the interaction between microbes and the nervous system.

Mentor: Jeffrey Bose Ph.D., Associate Professor, Microbiology, Molecular Genetics and Immunology.
