Biography

Niels Braaten is a 2024-2025 Self Memorial Scholar pursuing an M.S. in Aerospace Engineering. He earned a B.S. in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Kansas in 2024 and graduated from the University Honors Program. In his undergraduate career, Niels served on the KU AIAA student chapter executive board, was active in his fraternity Alpha Tau Omega, and was initiated into the Aerospace Engineering honor society Sigma Gamma Tau. Additionally, Niels was an undergraduate research assistant at the Center for Remote Sensing and Integrated Systems (CRESIS) and most recently at the Garrison Flight Research Center (KUFRL) under Drs. Mark Ewing and Shawn Keshmiri. After completing his graduate education, Niels intends to pursue a career focused on structural design for emerging aircraft and contribute to improving the sustainability and safety of the aerospace industry.
